RB Leipzig Vs Atletico Madrid
Match Review
1. Goalless first-half:
It was widely expected that Simeone's men would sit back and defend in contrast to their opponents. The German team under Nagelsmann had more of the ball during the first 45 minutes. Despite no goals from both teams, the first half was a fast-paced game. There were moments in the game on both sides. Nagelsmann's men had more control of the game and were able to create more opportunities while Atletico Madrid was hanging on and waiting for a counter. Leipzig could have opened the scoring when Halstenberg struck a shot with too much power.
Simeone's men on the other end reacted when Carrasco sprinted towards the box and shot towards the keeper who punched it away for a corner and Savic's looping header was comfortably saved. The German outfit was solid in defense as well as in the offense courtesy of Upemancano and Kampl. They were close to scoring when Upemacano's header from a corner was comfortably saved by Oblak. One problem faced by Leipzig was they were lacking the ability to finish despite creating many opportunities but were by far the better side.
2. Leipzig breaks the deadlock:
Since the start of the game, the German side was the better side as they had more of the ball and were controlling the game. The only issue they were facing was to find the back of the net. The departure of Timo Werner to Chelsea was a major factor for the Bundesliga outfit. Nagelsmann's men finally broke the deadlock when Laimer slipped a ball towards Sabitzer who chipped delightfully towards Olmo as his clever header beat Oblak to find the back of the net.
3. Atletico Madrid equalize:
After the German outfit broke the deadlock, Simeone brought in Joao Felix. The former Benfica man's introduction brought some confidence in them as the youngster began to make a difference. He also caused problems to Leipzig's defense and he also won a penalty for his side when he linked up brilliantly with Diego Costa and the club's record signing was brought down in the box. The young starlet made no mistake as he converted the spot-kick to equalize for his side.
4. German outfit score a late goal:
After Madrid's equalizer, the game was a bit slow as both sides were hanging on. Nevertheless, the German outfit was still holding more of the ball. In a sudden moment, Angelino sprinted after receiving a superb ball from Sabitzer to set-up for the American Tyler Adams, and the substitute lashes the ball towards the goal prompting Oblak to dive. Unfortunately for Simeone's men, the ball deflected off Savic and went past the committed keeper towards the back of the net. It was similar to the PSG comeback with the only exception that the team opened the scoring extended their lead.
What a surprising finish to this game. RB Leipzig triumphed over Atletico Madrid in this fixture. Overall, the German outfit was the better side without a doubt. Nagelsmann's tactics proved to be useful by holding more of the ball and controlling the tempo. They created more opportunities than the Spanish side, but the only dilemma they were facing was converting those chances into goals. Their efforts were finally rewarded when opened the scoring courtesy to a header from Olmo. Atletico equalized when they brought in Felix who made a difference as he won a penalty for his side and successfully converted. In the dying minutes of the game, Leipzig extended their lead when substitute Tyler Adams shot was deflected by Savic which left Oblak helpless as the ball found its way back of the net which turned out to be the winner. With this result, Leipzig will face PSG in the semi-final.
